After-school Art is taught by art teacher Jen to allow our young artists additional time to explore and experiment with a variety of media, creative experiences, and artistic techniques. After-school Art could include: drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, sewing, papier mache, weaving, textile art, assemblage, printmaking, bookbinding, and other arts and crafts. (This is not an exhaustive list, and we won't have time for all of these.)

We will try some things that we don't have time for in a typical hour of school art, and we may revisit projects that we have done previously in room 8. As in our school art sessions, we will have fun being creative and trying out lots of different things in After-school Art!

This enrollment is for the second session which will meet in room 8 from 1:45 to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays: 11/8, 11/15, 11/29, 12/6, 12/13, 12/20, 1/10, and 1/17.

In the event that Jen has to cancel a class due to instructor illness or other emergency, a make up session will be available on 1/24.

The $160 class fee includes all materials that we will use.

There is a minimum of 10 artists required and a maximum enrollment of 25. Attending students are expected to want to be there and to have a positive attitude. The After-school Art program is available only to currently enrolled students in grades 3-5 at Washington Open Elementary School.

Registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. If students sign up after enrollment is full, they will be put on a wait list. You will be contacted by email to confirm your registration.

In your May 18 Wednesday envelope there was a bright green auto insurance cover sheet that is marked for the school year 2017-2018.

In order to drive for next year on ANY field trip we need EACH driver to turn in a filled out bright green drivers cover sheet marked for the 2017-2018 school year.  Attached to that we need a copy of your car insurance policy's declaration page showing your coverage limits as well as the expiration date.  And we need a drivers record update (under online services) printout from the DMV website (or an H6 driving record from the DMV if this is the first time you are turning in your driving information)  All drivers will get processed through the District Office this summer.

The only drivers whose records will be processed during the 17-18 school year will be families who are new to Washington Open.

Please make every effort to do this as we did have some people who waited this past year and were not approved in time to drive on our end of year overnights!

This year, our school-wide art show is inspired by California artist Wayne Thiebaud. All grade levels created projects depicting sweets like those found in Thiebaud's artwork: popsicles, cupcakes, ice cream cones, cakes, lollipops, donuts, candies, and more! Students expressed themselves through a variety of techniques and media, including drawing, watercolor, mixed-media, painting, collage, printmaking, and sculpture. The hallway and library is full of colorful and delicious creative works, so be sure to come by and enjoy our fourth annual art show: So Sweet! So Creative!

It's time to start thinking about the Science Fair! At Washington Open, the science fair is an optional enrichment that allows students to complete a science fair project at home with parental supervision. All students K-5 are encouraged to complete a project, and everybody is invited to attend the fair! Our Science Fair will be held on Tuesday March 28 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Buchser Auxiliary Gym. To present a project at the science fair, all students must register to reserve their spot by using the online registration form available here: http:/tinyurl.com/wosciencefair2017

Science Fair Registration will be open through February 28th at 3 p.m.

We are excited to announce that the District STEAM Expo (formerly the District Science Fair) has introduced a new option for 4th and 5th grade students only: Rube Goldberg Machines! More info about RGM projects at the fair can be found here: https://sites.google.com/scusd.net/worubegoldberg/home

Want more information about the Science Fair? Want to see some sample projects or ask questions of the organizers? Come to one of our Info Sessions! We will have sample projects and committee members on hand in ROOM 8 on Wednesday February 8, before school from 8 to 8:25 a.m. and after school from 1:45 to 2:15 p.m.

It's play season, and that means lots of flower bouquets will be given to our actors and actresses! Art teacher Jen wanted to let everybody know that you can donate your floral tissue to the art program. Floral tissue paper is special because it has a waxed coating that makes it really useful for papier mache, collage, and other art projects. Simply smooth out the tissue paper from your bouquet (some wrinkles and tears are perfectly fine) and then fold it up. A collection box will be in the office and in room 8. Thanks for upcycling in the name of art!

This job includes posting Wednesday Bulletin news items every week and sometimes updating the home page. The job does not require you to know HTML, any content management systems, nor  how to use School Loop, although those skills would be helpful. This is a great job for anyone who wants to contribute to the community, but is not able to work onsite.

I am looking for a replacement because I'll be moving on to middle school next year. I'd like to have the new webmaster fully trained and ready to take on the job before spring break in April. That way I'll still around to answer any questions you'll have.

If you are interested, send me (Renee) an email at rhmccain at gmail.com.

School Science Fair Chairperson (or co-chair with a friend)

After many years leading up the Science Fair committee, your co-chairs Jen Johnson and Heather Daroczi will be moving on!  We are looking for one or two people to chair the committee.  We have great procedures in place, and a very thorough binder of resources to pass along.  You will spend this year shadowing us and go solo next year.  Commitment is mainly in the spring.  There is one December meeting with other leads and principal.  There is also at least one meeting in January with the science fair committee, consisting of other parents from the classrooms.  Knowledge of Excel is helpful.  Organize registration for school science fair.  Coordinate project demonstrations in classrooms.  Facilitate the school science fair in late March at Buchser, one Tuesday evening.   This volunteer position (or positions!) could be filled during school hours or even before and after the school day!   We are here to help you.  If you love science and want the science fair to continue, please talk to Jen Johnson at jjohnson@scusd.net  or Heather Daroczi at  Hdaroczi@aol.com.

District Science Fair Liaison (or co-chair with a friend)

Stephanie Schulte will be moving on soon too!  For this position, commitment is mainly in the spring after the March school science fair.  Meeting in December with Principal.  Attend January meeting with committee.  Assist the principal with her pizza and practice session.   After school fair, coordinate judging session for 4th and 5th graders interested in attending the District Science Fair.  Coordinate the field trip of maximum 12 students/projects to the district fair on a Wednesday during school hours.  Shadow Stephanie Schulte this year and go solo next year!  She is here to help you, please talk to her if you want to help!  Stephanie Schulte Stephanie@theschultes.org

Parents please remember that you are responsible for your child after school ends.  Once school ends, there is no longer provided supervision.  This means that you should be within arm’s reach of your child at all times.  Additionally, all school agreements and expectations, including the 3 B’s are still in effect.  Please remember to guide your child to being respectful of all adults and other students.

Here's the new online evaluation to help collect feedback about how things are going out at patrol. Parents and students can also go online and fill this out. If you are a witness to something wonderful or something concerning out at the drop-off zone, send me some information through this survey! People who are not official patrollers can skip some of the questions that don't apply to them.
Thanks everyone!

If any adults want to purchase hot lunch, the cost is $4.00 per meal.  Adult lunches cannot be charged to a student’s card.  If you (adult) would like to set up an account, you may do so by bringing cash or a check to Teresa.  If you want to just “pay as you go,” you can do that as well, but you must have exact change.

You can pay online for your child’s lunches with your credit card! You can also check your child’s balance any time. You can access the system by going to www.myschoolbucks.com. You will need to create an account in order to use this service.  Also you will need your student’s ID number. Of course you can always come in to the office and put money in your child’s account by writing a check or using cash.
