One of 287 schools honored by the California Department of Education

SANTA CLARA, CA —  State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today announced Santa Clara Unified School District’s Washington Open Elementary School as one of 287 elementary schools being honored under the California Distinguished Schools Program. This program returns after a three-year break and replaces the California Gold Ribbon Schools Program.

“These schools implement outstanding educational programs and practices that help California students realize their potential, and put them on the path to achieve their dreams,” Torlakson said. “Every day at these schools, teachers, administrators and classified employees, working with parents, apply their dedication, creativity, and talents toward providing a great education for all their students.”

“Washington Open demonstrates what students can do and schools can become when the whole community is engaged in the education of our children,” says Santa Clara Unified Superintendent Dr. Stan Rose. “Principal Barbara Berman and the entire Washington Open community, including all staff members and especially the students, are to be congratulated for their commitment to the teaching and learning that occurs at Washington Open. Well done!”

The 2018 California Distinguished Schools Program recognizes California elementary schools that have made exceptional gains in implementing academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education.

Schools that applied were eligible based on their performance and progress on the state indicators as described on the California School Dashboard. Indicators include test scores, suspension rates, and English learner progress. Schools were also eligible to apply for a California Exemplary Program Award in Arts Education, and/or Physical Activity and Nutrition Education, which will be announced at a later time. Washington Open Elementary School has additionally applied for the California Exemplary Program Award in Arts Education. These award winners represent examples of not just excellent teaching, learning, and collaborating, but also highly successful school climate efforts, ranging from real-time conflict resolution to positive behavior intervention.

The California School Recognition Program Awards Ceremony is on May 3, 2018, at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, California. The event includes photos with the State Superintendent, a reception, and dinner with student entertainment and speakers. The 2018 Distinguished Elementary Schools will be honored along with the Exemplary Program Award recipients (which will be announced at a later date), National Title I Distinguished Schools, 2018 Green Ribbon Schools, 2018 Civic Learning Award Schools, and the National Blue Ribbon Honorees from 2017.

A local event will be held at Washington Open Elementary School in May 2018, date and time to be determined and communicated out.

Visit the California Department of Education’s California Distinguished Schools Awardees 2018 webpage for a full list of recognized schools in California.

After-school Art is taught by art teacher Jen to allow our young artists additional time to explore and experiment with a variety of media, creative experiences, and artistic techniques. After-school Art could include: drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, sewing, papier mache, weaving, textile art, assemblage, printmaking, bookbinding, and other arts and crafts. (This is not an exhaustive list, and we won't have time for all of these.)

We will try some things that we don't have time for in a typical hour of school art, and we may revisit projects that we have done previously in room 8. As in our school art sessions, we will have fun being creative and trying out lots of different things in After-school Art!

This enrollment is for the second session which will meet in room 8 from 1:45 to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays: 11/8, 11/15, 11/29, 12/6, 12/13, 12/20, 1/10, and 1/17.

In the event that Jen has to cancel a class due to instructor illness or other emergency, a make up session will be available on 1/24.

The $160 class fee includes all materials that we will use.

There is a minimum of 10 artists required and a maximum enrollment of 25. Attending students are expected to want to be there and to have a positive attitude. The After-school Art program is available only to currently enrolled students in grades 3-5 at Washington Open Elementary School.

Registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. If students sign up after enrollment is full, they will be put on a wait list. You will be contacted by email to confirm your registration.

In your May 18 Wednesday envelope there was a bright green auto insurance cover sheet that is marked for the school year 2017-2018.

In order to drive for next year on ANY field trip we need EACH driver to turn in a filled out bright green drivers cover sheet marked for the 2017-2018 school year.  Attached to that we need a copy of your car insurance policy's declaration page showing your coverage limits as well as the expiration date.  And we need a drivers record update (under online services) printout from the DMV website (or an H6 driving record from the DMV if this is the first time you are turning in your driving information)  All drivers will get processed through the District Office this summer.

The only drivers whose records will be processed during the 17-18 school year will be families who are new to Washington Open.

Please make every effort to do this as we did have some people who waited this past year and were not approved in time to drive on our end of year overnights!

Here's the new online evaluation to help collect feedback about how things are going out at patrol. Parents and students can also go online and fill this out. If you are a witness to something wonderful or something concerning out at the drop-off zone, send me some information through this survey! People who are not official patrollers can skip some of the questions that don't apply to them.

If any adults want to purchase hot lunch, the cost is $4.00 per meal.  Adult lunches cannot be charged to a student’s card.  If you (adult) would like to set up an account, you may do so by bringing cash or a check to Teresa.  If you want to just “pay as you go,” you can do that as well, but you must have exact change.

You can pay online for your child’s lunches with your credit card! You can also check your child’s balance any time. You can access the system by going to www.myschoolbucks.com. You will need to create an account in order to use this service.  Also you will need your student’s ID number. Of course you can always come in to the office and put money in your child’s account by writing a check or using cash.
