Our Field Trips

At Washington Open fields trips are an import part of the curriculum.  Throughout the year, Washington Open students enjoy off-campus, hands-on learning through field trips. Following are examples of our past and current field trips*:

Kindergarten

  • A behind the scenes tour of Chevy's Restaurant. The kids got to go inside a freezer and learned how they make the perfect flour tortillas.
  • A fun day at Las Palmas Park for all the Kindergarten classes to get to know each other before moving on to 1st Grade!
  • A really cool trip to Costco, where we will learn to make pizza, see how cakes are decorated and eat lots of good food!
  • A tour of Cosentino's Market.
  • Ambulance visit.
  • Going up into the hills to learn about 'Five Senses' at the Alum Rock Youth Science Institute.
  • Learning about art at the Palo Alto Jr. Museum.
  • Learning about the planets and stars at the Minolta Planetarium.
  • Mission Library for Story Time (walking)
  • Safeway tour with a goody bag!
  • San Jose Police Department Mounted Unit to check out the horses.
  • Tumbling Fun at the California Sports Center.
  • V.S.I.  Sanborn Park for animals & their adaptations.
  • Walking to Santa Clara University's Mayer Theater to see plays.  Hansel & Gretel and The Elves And The Shoemaker are a couple of examples.
  • Whole Foods for a tour and some tasting.
  • YSI Alum Rock Nature Walk for some outdoor fun.

1st Grade

  • Watching the wonders of the insect world at Natural Bridge (Monarch Butterflies) and the YSI - Sanborn Insect Fair.
  • Making some dough at Pizza My Heart.
  • Learning about science at the Children's Discovery Museum.
  • Yummy Apple Picking.
  • Going to several Plays including The Ugly Duckling, Bedtime, Peter Rabbit, Little Mermaid, and The Frog Prince.
  • Learning about beast of old at YSI - Dinosaurs.
  • Triton Museum and the Cantor Museum at Stanford for their fine art displays.
  • Having fun at the California Sports Center and Airborne Gymnastics.
  • Getting out book on at the Mission Library.
  • San Jose Ballet classes.
  • Checking out the wild life at the Oakland Zoo.
  • Steam engine rides at Roaring Camp.
  • Archaeology at the Skulls Exhibit.
  • Watching Flamenco Dancers strut their stuff.
  • Finding out hose things work at Costco.

2nd Grade

  • Figuring out how the United States Post Office actually works.
  • Exploring Project Look.
  • Natural Bridges Tide Pools and the life they harbor.
  • Learning about the wildlife at the San Francisco Zoo.
  • Learning about the classics at the San Francisco Symphony.
  • History at the Hidden Villa.
  • The Intel Museum and what technology means to the Bay Area.
  • Having fun at Wilson Gardens.
  • Geography at Back to USA.
  • Getting our party hats on at Vasona - 2nd Grade Party.
  • The Basic Brown Bear Factory and how they make all those wonderful toys.

 

3rd Grade

  • The world of science fact at Lawrence Hall of Science.
  • Christmas decor at Ardenwood.
  • Holiday Cookie baking.
  • Taking in some Plays like Canterville Ghost, Cay, and Ben Franklin
  • Elephant seals at Ano Nuevo.
  • Chinese New Year Feast Cooking and Parade.
  • Learning about our oldest residents, the Deer Hollow Ohlone Native Americans.
  • Exploring science and physics at the Exploratorium.
  • Alviso Wetlands wildlife and hiking.
  • 1st and 2nd Pioneer Trail and walk.
  • Taking in the view at the Fioli Habitats.
  • Learning about the history of our valley at the Almaden Quicksilver Mine.
  • Sanborn overnight stay.
  • Taking in the local fauna at Gizdich Ranch.
  • The solar system comes alive at the Chabot Space Center.
  • Pioneer Day celebration.
  • A BBQ at Vasona to celebrate the school year.

4th Grade

  • Taking in the ocean life at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
  • A visit to Sacramento that includes our State Capitol and Railroad Museum.
  • A trip to Mission San Juan Bautista.
  • An overnight trip to Balclutha.
  • Peralta Adobe exploration.
  • Getting some culture at San Francisco China Town.
  • Camping overnight in the Gold Country.
  • An end of the year Sailing journey.

5th Grade

  • Science Camp at Camp Campbell in Boulder Creek.
  • A visit to the ocean at the Marine Science Institute in San Mateo.
  • Watching an IMAX Movie about Lewis and Clark.
  • An overnight trip to Petaluma.
  • Students will visit the old historical Downtown San Jose Courthouse and participate in a “Mock Trial” where each child plays a roll from a trial scripted out and Judge Monahan oversees the action.
