ENROLLMENT

HOW DO I ENROLL MY CHILD?

The Santa Clara Unified Board of Trustees has established a policy of limited Open Enrollment. Although some of our schools are already at capacity, this policy allows families who reside within the boundaries of the district to request enrollment of their children at "any District school which may have space available for additional students." Admittance to the school of your choice under the Open Enrollment process is done by an annual random lottery system. If you applied last year and were not admitted, you will need to reapply again this year if you want to be considered for your school of choice.

Prior to applying for Open Enrollment, you must register at your school of residence. If you do not know your school of residence, please refer to the District's School Finder. You can visit the District website for more information about the registration process. Please direct any enrollment questions to your school of residence or the District mainline at (408) 423-2000.

Registration Homepage

  1. Visit the Santa Clara Unified School District Open Enrollment page to familiarize yourself with district Open Enrollment procedures (see above).
  2. Attend a Parent Information Meeting and a Classroom Observation Tour (see below).
  3. Register your child at your neighborhood school (See the School Finder).

  4. Select Washington Open as your first choice on the online registration system during the Open Enrollment period.

  5. Please direct any enrollment questions to your school of residence or our District mainline at (408) 423-2000.

If more students apply than the capacity of the grade, there will be a random, unbiased selection process that is fair to all students (a lottery). Children not placed initially through lottery will be placed on a waiting list for spots in the program. You will be notified by mail from SCUSD about the outcome of your request for open enrollment.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO ENROLL?
All students entering grades K-5 who are eligible to enroll in any SCUSD school may apply for open enrollment to Washington Open Elementary. Please see the SCUSD Open Enrollment page or contact SCUSD for more information.

ARE STUDENTS WHO RESIDE OUTSIDE OF SCUSD ELIGIBLE TO ENROLL AT WASHINGTON OPEN?

WHAT WILL BE COVERED?
The information night is an important chance for you to learn about the school's philosophy, curriculum, parent participation, and programs, and to better understand if it is a good fit for your family. You will hear from our principal, teachers, alumni, and parents, and have the opportunity to ask questions. In order to maximize your time in the classrooms, there is limited time for discussion during school tours. The parent information night will provide you with a much fuller picture of the school and also allow you more time to hear from teachers, who may not be able to talk with you during tours.

IS THIS REQUIRED?
No, but it is strongly recommended to fully understand the philosophy of the school.

SCHOOL TOURS AND CLASSROOM OBSERVATION

Observation in the Classroom is essential for making an informed educational decision for your child. You will be able to observe the school’s philosophy in action and understand the model for parent participation. Guided Tours are for adults only. Children, including infants, will not be permitted on tours. Please plan to attend the entire tour. You will visit classrooms in all grade levels. Please, no photography, videos, or use of cell phones during the tours.

WHAT ARE THE DATES AND TIMES?

Guided Tours will begin January 14, 2019 and end on February 6, 2019.

PARKING?
Please park in the large lot between Washington Open Elementary and Buchser Middle School.  If you see solar panels, you are in the right place.  Do NOT park in the 2 smaller lots along Washington Street, as they are staff only.

IS THIS MANDATORY?
No, but we ask you do not open enroll without attending a meeting. We wish for you to fully understand what our school offers and what will be asked of you.

HOW CAN I MAXIMIZE MY OBSERVATIONS OF A SPECIFIC GRADE LEVEL?

Although observing multiple grade levels is beneficial in understanding the entirety of Open’s program, if there is a specific grade level you wish to visit, please call the office to confirm that grade level’s schedule for a particular morning.  Students participate in a variety of enrichment programs, such as art and music, on different mornings.  Some grades may also be away on field trips.

CAN I BRING CHILDREN?
Adults only.  Please provide childcare for your children, including infants.

CAN I TAKE PICTURES?
Please no pictures or videos in order to protect the privacy of the students.
