Air Quality Update for September 11, 2020

We monitor the air quality daily and issue districtwide messages when the current or forecasted air quality is in the "Unhealthy" (red) category according to Air Now (U.S. Air Quality Index).

This message provides information and guidance on today's air quality. Note that:

  • all athletic conditioning practices are suspended immediately
  • outdoor staff should be given indoor work or frequent breaks
  • weekly meal distribution sites will still be open, but the pick up will move indoors if the air quality moves to the "Very Unhealthy" (purple) category

This message applies to Friday, September 11 only.

Air Quality: Unhealthy

According to Air Now:

  • The air quality has moved into the "unhealthy" category this morning (index of 165 out of the 151-200 unhealthy range).

Recommended Actions

The chart below from the Santa Clara County Office of Education provides guidance to help us determine actions to take for each of the air quality index categories. Please review this chart for actions you can take based on current or projected air quality.

People with heart or lung disease, older adults, children, and teens

  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities.
  • Keep outdoor activities short.
  • Consider moving physical activities indoors or rescheduling them.

Everyone

  • Choose less strenuous activities (like walking instead of running) so you don’t breathe as hard.
  • Shorten the amount of time you are active outdoors.
  • Be active outdoors when air quality is better.

Santa Clara County Office of Education Air Quality Guidelines
